Spiders in Singapore

Spiders in Singapore

Identification, control & when to remove them safely

Spiders make people nervous. You see webs in corners. A spider crawls across the wall. Most people panic.

But spiders are actually helpful. They eat flies, cockroaches, and other household pests. Understanding when to remove spiders and when to leave them helps you maintain a healthy home balance.

How Many Spiders Live in Singapore?

There are over 800 species of spiders found in Singapore, however, most of them live in the jungles and forested areas of Singapore. Spiders found in Singapore include 583 unique species from confirmed sightings.

Only a small fraction of Singapore spiders live in urban homes. Most jungle spiders never enter human buildings. This is important because it means your home spider problem is manageable.

Common House Spiders in Singapore

Daddy Longlegs

Very successful in urban areas. Spin thin, tangled webs in corners, under sinks, garages, attics. Adult female: 6 to 7mm, male: 5mm. Long, skinny legs up to 30 times body length. Lives 1-3 years.

Wolf Spider

Wolf Spiders can be anywhere between 10 and 35 mm. large and range in colour from a dark yellow to tan to dark brown. Active hunters. Don’t build webs. These are one of the most common invaders and will bite people and animals if they feel threatened.

Yellow Sac Spider

Adult female: 5/16″; male: 1/4″. Brown to grey color. Builds silken sacs instead of webs. One of the most poisonous spider species that can be found indoors. Nocturnal hunters.

Kidney Garden Spider

Females can range in size from 6-9 mm. while males are 3-5 mm. Thick, round abdomen. White with black markings. They have a dark, kidney-bean shaped mark on their backs. Lives in gardens, enters homes for food.

Jumping Spiders

Don’t build webs. Hunt by leaping onto prey. They hunt by leaping several centimeters onto their prey, grabbing them, and injecting venom by bite. Small, colorful. Great for pest control. Low bite risk.

Golden Orb-weavers

Members of this family generally build spiral wheel-shaped webs that sometimes appear yellowish. Build very large webs. Their webs are among the biggest among the spiders, some reaching several metres wide, and have been observed to be strong enough to trap small birds. Rarely bite humans.

Spider Facts: What You Need to Know

Key characteristics of spiders

  • Eight legs: Spiders are not insects because they feature eight legs instead of six and have two body segments instead of three.
  • Eight eyes (usually): The majority of spiders have eight eyes and all cannot hear.
  • Special sensors: Instead, they have special hairs on their legs which detect movement in the environment around them.
  • All are venomous: Although all spiders are venomous, only some species produce venom that is dangerous for humans.
  • Fast silk production: The silk threads are very strong, and some scientists have used them to develop bullet-proof vests.
  • Digestive system: To feed, they usually inject digestive enzymes into their prey to dissolve the body tissues, and then suck up the liquid meal.

Benefits of Spiders in Your Home

Why you should let spiders stay

  • Natural pest control: Spiders are attracted to areas which have other pests such as flies, cockroaches, and beetles. They eat hundreds of insects monthly.
  • No disease transmission: Spiders don’t carry disease. They don’t contaminate food or spread pathogens.
  • Non-aggressive: Spiders don’t actively attack people, biting is a self-defense mechanism that spiders use they feel a threat to their life.
  • Self-limiting: When pest insects disappear, spiders leave or die. They’re self-regulating.
  • Safe for children and pets: Most house spider bites are extremely rare. Venom is too mild to cause serious harm.
  • Low cost solution: One spider prevents hundreds of fly, ant, and cockroach problems. No pesticide expense.

Signs of Spider Infestation in Your Home

Most household spiders aren’t infestations. But these signs mean spider population is high:

Multiple egg sacs

Look out for spider egg sacs, which are white in colour and round in shape, attached to surfaces or spider webs. More than 3-4 sacs indicates high population.

Webs everywhere

Webs in every room, not just corners. Multiple webs on single wall. Sign of high spider population seeking shelter.

Spiderlings visible

Tiny spiders on walls, windowsills. Recently hatched spiders looking for food. Indicates breeding activity.

Large numbers indoors

Seeing spiders daily despite cleaning. Multiple sightings in short time period. Points to established colony.

When to Control Spider Populations

Most house spiders should be left alone. But control them if:

  • Population is causing visible distress to household members
  • Egg sacs are multiplying across multiple rooms
  • Webs make house appear dirty or neglected
  • Spiders are appearing in food storage areas
  • You have a specific fear or phobia affecting daily life
  • Professional event or guests visiting and discomfort is justified

In these cases, professional removal is safer than DIY attempts. Hiring pest control professionals helps not only to treat active spider infestations but also to identify and remove the reasons behind the infestation.

Spider Prevention Strategies

Seal entry points

Cracks around doorframes windows, and in walls should be sealed to ensure spiders do not have a way in. Focus on gaps around doors and window frames.

Keep landscaping trimmed

Since many types of spiders live in gardens and vegetation, it’s important to keep plants away from the house. Maintain distance between gardens and building exterior.

Reduce other pests

A person can prevent spiders by making their home undesirable to other pests. Control flies, cockroaches, and ants. Spiders will leave without food source.

Keep home clean

One of the best ways to prevent an infestation is to keep the property clean. Regular vacuuming removes webs and egg sacs before they multiply.

Reduce clutter

Remove unnecessary items. Spiders hide in boxes, papers, and stored items. Keeping your things organised will ensure that there is less clutter for spiders to build their nests and breed.

Improve ventilation

Well-ventilated spaces are less attractive to spiders. You can also keep the place well ventilated and free from moisture and water that attracts not just spiders but most pests.
