7 Tips To Prepare for Bed Bug Treatment

Bed bugs are a serious issue. They can be difficult to find and they spread quickly. Bed bug bites can cause allergic reactions to humans and animals. This is why you need to eradicate them with bed bug control to avoid health risks.

Depending on the type of inspection and treatment type, there are certain steps and requirements when preparing for bed bug treatment. Below are some general steps to take to help your pest control technician treat your home effectively.

1. Bedrooms

Remove all stored items under the bed. Remove all linens and sheets from the bed, crib, sofas, and any other place where you sleep. Prop box springs and mattresses against the wall. Leave in the open the beds, cots, and sofas for treatment.

2. Closets and Furniture

Empty closets and drawers and inspect their contents for pests. Place books in the floor, away from the walls and contents of the drawers on the top surface. Empty and keep open luggage and suitcases for the treatment.

Pull all furniture away from the baseboards and walls to enable exterminators to treat hard-to-reach areas. Turn off and unplug all appliances and keep them off the floor and the walls.

3. Floors and Walls

Declutter to keep the bed bugs from hiding and to ensure access for pest exterminators. Vacuum the furniture and floors beforehand to remove pests and debris in surfaces. Inspect mirrors on walls and picture frames for bed bug signs and inform your  exterminator if you find anything.

4. Bathrooms

Remove the contents of drawers, medicine cabinets, storage cabinets, and window sills. Place personal items like cosmetics, toothpaste, toothbrushes, medications, and toiletries in sealed plastic bags. You can then place them in the bathtub.

5. Kitchens

Store all opened food in sealed plastic bags or inside the refrigerator. Place in containers or sealed plastic bags all dishes, utensils, glassware, cleaning supplies, and other stuff lying around in your pantry. Dispose shopping bags from the kitchen area and empty trash cans and recycling bins.

6. Pets

Empty, clean, and cover pet food bowls. Remove pet bedding for laundering. Take out fish tanks and have your pets vacate the premises during treatment. You can take them back inside after 24 hours.

7. Laundering

Take all your laundry to the laundromat for washing. Make sure to put them inside sealed, biodegradable plastic bags to protect others. Things that are safe to wash in hot water should be washed together and dried at high temperature for 20 to 50 minutes to kill both bed bug eggs and live bed bugs.

Those items that can’t be washed, have them dry cleaned or put them in the dryer on high to ensure that pests are killed.
