5 Household Pests in Singapore That Bite

Woke up to find bite marks on your skin? Some bites are itchy while others are painful and inflamed. Bug bites happen when household pests are not dealt with pest control in Singapore.

Some pests bite in self-defense while others latch on to people and animals as their food source. While other biting pests feed quickly and leave, others hide in body areas to gorge themselves and only drop off when they had their fill. Below are 5 house pests that bite humans and animals for their survival.

1. Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are one of the common pests found in Singapore homes. These pesky pests are usually found near water sources or dark corners of the house. They are known to bite humans and leave red, itchy, skin bumps.

Considered to be a disease vector, mosquitoes can transmit many serious and potentially fatal diseases to people like dengue fever and West Nile virus. They were also connected to the spread of malaria, the Chikungunya virus, and yellow fever all over the world. Only female mosquitoes make humans their blood meal because they need the nutrients for their developing eggs.

So, if you noticed mosquitoes abound in your home, call for mosquito control services right away.

2. Ticks

Another blood-sucking pest is the ticks. These arachnids have different types and the most common is the dog ticks. Although their habitat is highly vegetated areas, dogs can carry them inside your home or they can latch on you when you go outdoors.

Some tick-borne diseases include Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and anaplasmosis. Ticks can burrow beneath the skin and feed on your blood until you remove them.

3. Fleas

Fleas don’t only feast on cats and dogs, they feed on humans too. Pets can get them outdoors and bring them home. Their bites are itchy yet painful at the same time. Their saliva can trigger extreme allergy dermatitis to pets. They are easily transmissible because fleas can jump as high as 8 inches to transfer to a new host.

Pathogens like flea-borne (murine) typhus, Cat scratch disease (CSD), and plague are just some of the diseases that humans can acquire from flea bites.

4. Bed Bugs

These household pests feed on you while you sleep. They hide on beds and bed linens and can hitchhike on luggage, purses, and other personal things to find human hosts. Bed bugs bite humans on exposed body parts such as legs and arms. Their bites can leave red, itchy welts but sometimes no signs at all.

Although bed bugs don’t transmit diseases, they can potentially cause allergic reactions to humans. To protect yourself and everyone in your household from bed bugs, have regular bed bug control in your home.

5. Ants

Ants are not known to transmit disease to humans but they have nasty bites. Their bites are painful and cause red bumps on the skin. Carpenter ants puncture the skin and spray formic acid into the wound, heightening the pain even more.

Stings from fire ants, on the other hand, show white, fluid-filled pustules or blisters after a day. In some cases, swelling around the sting marks can be seen. They can be itchy and red and scratching them can encourage infection.
