7 Most Common Insects in Singapore Houses

Singapore is a haven for insects.

Insects are everywhere and are active all year through. With Singapore having a tropical climate, insects thrive in it.

Although insects are necessary to the balance of our ecosystem, they cause inconveniences and illness too. They become pests that need to be controlled or exterminated to remove the potential risks to human health and safety.

The top 7 most common insects in Singapore houses include cockroaches, flies, ants, booklice, mosquitoes, termites, and bed bugs.

1. Cockroaches

A dirty environment encourages cockroaches to flourish. To avoid attracting these pesky bugs into your home, keep your home clean and organized.

Spray with insecticide or use natural repellents like neem, garlic, essential oils, catnip, and bay leaf to beat off cockroaches. If all else fails, get a professional in cockroach pest control.

2. Flies

Flies can be dangerous to our health. If unchecked, they can spread diseases. They feed on anything and are likely to pick germs from any premises they settle on.

To remove flies from your home, you can use a fly trap. Fill a glass jar with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and dish soap and line it with a cone-shaped paper. All flies that found their way inside it will not be able to escape.

If your place of business is infested with flies, it’s best to engage fly control.

3. Ants

Just like flies, ants can also spread diseases. They are attracted to food particles, sugar, and sweet foods. Keep surfaces clean and store sugar and sweet foods in tightly-sealed containers to keep ants away.

Drive ants away using ant poison and natural methods like spraying them directly with peppermint and dish soap mixture.

4. Book Lice

Booklice thrive in places that retain moisture. Mold or fungi that are their primary food source grow in these areas.

To deal with booklice, use mold-killing chemicals or dehumidifiers. Disposing of all moldy stuff could also help.

5. Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are notorious for carrying deadly diseases like dengue, malaria, and zika. Applying repellent products in the body can prevent mosquito bites. But to ensure that they don’t flourish, you must seek out their breeding ground and remove them.

Empty the water sources to prevent them from laying their eggs. Burn citrus peels or candles with peppermint scent to drive them away from your home.

If that doesn’t work, leave it to the professionals in mosquito control.

6. Termites

Termites can cost you lots of money if left unchecked. They devour wood and can damage your ceilings, walls, floors, and wooden furniture. From the soil, they crawl through tubes and into your furniture.

Termite extermination is best left to the experts in pest control to eradicate them immediately.

7. Bed Bugs

Although bed bugs don’t carry disease, their bites can cause allergic reactions. Bed bugs are easily transmitted from one place to another through old furniture, bedsheets, and old mattresses.

Vacuum the carpet, drapes, and upholstered furniture regularly to help stop the spread of these bugs. Call bed bug control to exterminate these pests safely.

Final Thoughts

DIY remedies can help. But they cannot remove these pests effectively. The most effective solution would be to hire pest control in Singapore to identify the type of infestation and deal with it properly.
